How We Actually Got Here

Back in 2018, our founder Harriet Pennington was frustrated. She'd spent a decade in traditional banking and kept seeing the same pattern—people needed help understanding their finances, but the industry kept speaking in riddles.

So she left. Started minthaevox with one belief: financial education shouldn't feel like decoding secret documents. It should feel like having coffee with someone who actually gets it.

The first six months were rough. Running workshops from borrowed community spaces, convincing people that yes, this really was free and no, there wasn't a catch. But slowly, word spread. By the end of year one, we'd worked with 180 families across Canberra.

Now we're based in Tuggeranong and serving families throughout Australia. Same mission, just more people who've realized finances don't have to be terrifying.

Fourteen years in banking taught Harriet what not to do. She started minthaevox to create the kind of financial education she wished existed when she was starting out. Lives in Tuggeranong with two rescue dogs and an unreasonable number of houseplants.

Financial Education Coordinator

Joined minthaevox in 2021 after years running community programs in Adelaide. Ingrid designs our workshops and makes sure everything we teach actually works in real life. Known for turning complicated concepts into stories people remember.

Our Journey So Far

The key moments that shaped who we are and how we work with families today

2018: Started Small

Harriet launched minthaevox from a tiny shared office space. First workshop had eight people. She was terrified. They asked great questions and came back the next month with friends.

2020: Adapted Fast

Pandemic hit. Moved everything online within three weeks. Discovered that virtual workshops actually worked better for parents and shift workers. Kept both options ever since.

2022: Expanded the Team

Brought on Ingrid and two part-time educators. Finally had capacity to develop specialized programs for different life stages. Started serving families beyond Canberra.

2025: Looking Forward

Planning our most ambitious year yet. New programs launching in autumn. Partnering with community organizations across regional Australia. Still learning, still improving, still focused on making finances less stressful.
